A ball that makes you feel hit in the head.

The idea came from a tattoo: could that cross-eyed, glitched optical effect be pulled off on a sphere? It looked promising if the panels were offset just so. To build the range of shades the illusion needs, each panel was dyed with progressively more watered-down dye. Ninety-two panels in total, and it started working after only a few were stitched together, then got stronger with every one added.

Your eyes can't quite focus on it.

It looks relatively normal when it is moving. It is when the ball stops that the effect takes hold and the eye cannot settle on it. Honestly it is worse in every way than a normal ball, harder to make and it hurts to look at, but it stands out on a shelf full of footballs and it holds your attention, probably because there is no way to focus on it however hard you try.

Maybe a weapon from twelve yards.

Looking at it feels a little like looking cross-eyed. Which raises a thought: from the penalty spot or a free kick, a ball like this might be a genuinely useful object, the kind of thing that could put a goalkeeper off for the half second that matters.
